Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder, also known as Manic/Depressive Disorder is also a very common mental illness. A person may be depressed for a while and then become very happy and energetic. The person may take unnecessary risks, go on shopping sprees, and go for long periods with out sleep. This is the manic phase of the disease.

Each phase can last a few minutes or many months or years. During either phase, the person can be a danger to himself or others and should be watched closely. The person should see a mental health professional. Contact your local mental health service provider, your physician, or the United Way Helpline. Several medications are available to treat bipolar disorder. These medicines help to stabilize the person so that he or she does not experience the "highs" or the "lows." The person may need to take medication for life.
