Depression
Depression is a very common mental illness. Evereyone has the blues sometimes. However, if a person is sad and blue for more than two or three weeks, that person should seek professional help.
People who face a traumatic event in their lives often suffer from depression. Such events include the death of a spouse or loved one, loss of employment, ill health, or financial difficulties. Drugs and alcohol can also cause depression or make symptoms worse.
If a person talks of suicide or dwells upon death, that person should get help immediately. Contact your local mental health service, your physician, or the United Way Helpline. Anyone talking about suicide or death should be taken seriously.Several medicines are available for treatment. Professional counselling is often an important part of the recovery process and should be included in the treatment program.
